Building on the successes of RAE 2008, the Business School has invested in extensive staff development activity in the form of new staff, expanded research seminars, supporting staff PhD completions and investing in attendance at conferences and events in the UK and overseas. To enhance its international profile, the Business School has been proactive in the organisation of a number of events and conferences such as the forthcoming Wellbeing, Family Business and Carbon Trading Conferences to be held in 2011.
The Business School hosts a number of Research Centres. The leading Centre for Intellectual Property Policy & Management (CIPPM), has attracted more than £500,000 in research council funding, including from the ESRC, AHRC, Leverhulme Trust, Arts Council, governmental departments and the European Commission. The CIPPM also runs an annual public lecture series and symposia.
In addition, the School has a considerable cohort of PhD students and the School regularly hosts distinguished scholars from around the world while staff serve on the editorial boards of many leading journals including the British Journal of Management, and the European Journal of Finance. Staff are actively engaged with industry, commerce, the public sector and research councils in bidding for and delivering an eclectic mix of both business–facing and research–driven projects.
The School is committed to applied business research that is of benefit to policy makers, government bodies, practitioners, and our future students, whilst developing the academic critical mass of the discipline. This is reflected by the Centre for Entrepreneurship which is being developed into the Business School in March 2011. The major strength of the Business School is the vast investment in research–led staff at both senior and junior level. In addition, we are advertising for a further three professorial posts, as well as up to ten junior posts in the next two years, as well as a number of PhD studentships.
Most recently, and with the support of HEIF funding, a financial services group has been established bringing together the wealth of financial services related expertise within the School.
