Bournemouth University welcomes new Business School Dean

7 April 2011

Professor Roger Palmer

Bournemouth University (BU) is delighted to welcome Professor Roger Palmer as Dean of the Business School.

Professor Palmer joins BU from Henley Business School at the University of Reading, where he was Professor of Marketing and Management and Head of the School of Management, and brings with him a wealth of commercial and academic experience.

His early qualifications were in agriculture and related topics, and he completed both his MBA and PhD at the Cranfield School of Management. Professor Palmer’s doctoral research, which he completed in 2001, studied the marketing practices of mature businesses that contribute to improvements in profitability.

With a background in the agriculture, food, chemical and pharmaceutical industries, Professor Palmer has worked in a varied range of areas, including research, technical support, sales and marketing. He has extensive senior management experience, having previously held such roles as Marketing Director for Pauls Agriculture, a £200 million manufacturer of animal feedstuffs, and Chief Executive of the Animal Health Division of Cyanamid UK. Latterly he established a green field start-up business in the child day care sector as a private venture, which he ran for a number of years before selling to a larger chain.

Professor Palmer’s research interests lie in marketing strategy, business to business marketing, relationship and value management, marketing implementation and practice, and technological innovation. He has completed consultancy work for a number of organisations, ranging from charities and not for profit organisations, to multinational companies.

In addition to his regular teaching commitments at universities around the world, Professor Palmer has held positions as a Visiting Professor at EM Lyon, Queensland University of Technology and the University of Auckland Business School. As well as being a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Marketing and of the Higher Education Academy, Professor Palmer was previously a senior examiner with the Chartered Institute of Marketing. His work has been published widely in journals including Industrial Marketing Management, the Journal of Marketing Management and the Journal of Business and Industrial Marketing. He has also published a number of books and is a member of the editorial boards of several international journals.

Speaking of his appointment, Professor Palmer said: “BU has a strong and rapidly growing reputation, with a capability acknowledged by employers of producing students that can make an early and positive impact. The continued investment in staff and facilities in the Business School will further enhance our position and I am delighted to take on this role as we prepare for further growth.”

BU’s Vice-Chancellor Professor John Vinney added: “I am delighted that Roger will be joining us at BU. Roger’s mix of commercial and academic leadership experience, coupled with his enthusiasm and skills will enable him to make a strong contribution to the senior team.”
